POETRY CONTEST OPENS

The Friends of the Algur Meadows Museum is delighted to sponsor a poetry contest in conjunction with the artwork Matador by Monica Zeringue. This poetry contest is based on poems written in response to Zeringue’s Matador now on view in the main gallery of the museum. 

Julie Kane, Louisiana Poet Laureate, will serve as juror for the contest that is open to Louisiana poetry writers, age 18 and above, residing in Caddo Parish. The Friends of the Algur Meadows Museum will present cash awards to contest winners.

The awards are $150 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place, and $75 for 3rd place. Three honorable mention awards include a gift certificate of $35 each to Barnes and Noble. A special public program scheduled for November 4, at 2:00 PM in the museum galleries, features poetry readings by Julie Kane and contest winners, along with a book signing by Julie Kane that follows poetry readings.

The deadline for submissions is 4:00 PM, Sunday, October 14, 2012. Submissions should be made to the Meadows Museum of Art, 2911 Centenary Boulevard, Shreveport, LA 71104. The cover sheet MUST ONLY INCLUDE the poet’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address well as the title of each poem submitted. Participants may submit up to three poems. Each poem must be submitted on a separate sheet that includes the title and poem ONLY. 

Participating poets can visit the Meadows Museum on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday between Noon and 4:00 PM and on Thursdays between Noon and 5:00 PM. The museum is also open on Saturday and Sunday between 1:00 – 4:00 PM and is free of charge. For more information, call the Meadows Museum of Art at 318-869-5040.
